Background of the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination
Camp Lejeune, a U.S. Marine Corps base located in North Carolina, as well as MCAS New River, experienced water contamination for several decades. From the 1953 to 1987, military personnel and their families were exposed to toxic chemicals due to contaminated drinking water. The contamination resulted from various sources, including leaking underground storage tanks and industrial activities on the base.
